Summer Pet Care Tips
Unlike humans who sweat to cool themselves off, dogs and cats cool off by panting. Prolonged panting can indicate a serious problem, such as heat stroke. If your pet exhibits signs, cool him down immediately and transport him to the nearest veterinarian's office.
Dogs and cats that spend much of their day outdoors should have easy access to the comfort of their air-conditioned home. If you do not already have a "doggie door," one can be installed, easily and inexpensively. If this is not an option, pay close attention when pets are laying by the door, panting and waiting to come in.
Never leave your animals outside or on a screened porch without being able to seek shade. Always provide access to plenty of cool, fresh water.
Although we all want to spend as much time as possible with our pets, it is NOT a good idea to take our pets when running errands and shopping. Pets are not welcome in most public places. Leave your companions at home, in air-conditioned comfort, where they can wait anxiously for your return.
If you must take your pet along, do not leave them unattended in parked vehicles. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can reach over 150 degrees in just a few minutes. Your pet can overheat and suffer from heat exhaustion while your picking up their favorite treat at the local supermarket. Instead, pamper them with a frozen dog treat (found in the ice cream section) upon your return.
They will be much happier, and you won't be in a frenzy while shopping that you have to maneuver around the store with sparks on your heals just because Fido or Fuzzy is in the car.
Weekly grooming of your pet is extremely important during the summer months. A heatwave haircut is a good choice. Brushing and grooming removes loose hair and keeps your pet more comfortable. Heat and humidity can cause the skin to become very dry and irritated. A thorough brushing feels just as good to them as our luxurious scalp message at the local salon.
Many inexpensive products can help relieve itchy dry skin if it does develop. Even people products for dandruff and dry scalp can be very helpful in relieving animal skin irritations.
Many brands of pet food contain ingredients that can help maintain healthy skin and coat. Supplements replace the natural oils needed in the skin to prevent dryness that the summer sun can remove. Omega fish oil caplets are effective for skin problems. Coats become healthier, softer and shinier with use of these supplements.
The pet industry is a multi-million dollar business providing many refreshing innovations for our beloved companions. Some of the latest include cooling mats to lay on, body accessories like cooling collars, neck bandanas, plus an array of freezer toys and bones for them to chew on. For crates, cages and car carriers, battery operated fans are the coolest. They attach easily to the container, providing a constant breeze.
Our pets depend on us to take care of them. They give us unconditional love and devotion. Show them you care by keeping them comfortable, cool and safe throughout "The Dog Days of Summer."
